Details of Service: Awaiting further information. Charles Howell is not listed on the official Nominal Roll and did not sail with the 117th Battalion to England. A letter published in an Eastern Townships newspaper (see link below) gives indication that Howell left the Battalion in May 1916 to see his father somewhere in the United States, possibly New York, and did not make it back before the battalion left Canada. The letter goes on to say that Howell re-enlisted in the Artillery and was Killed In Action in France. There are, however, no records of Howell re-enlisting nor are there any records of his death in France. The letter is dated 20 January 1917, and is only signed "his comrade". Given that there are no other records to support the claims made in this letter, it is highly suspicious that Howell returned to Canada and proceeded to France.
