Details of Service:

Fred West attested for service with the 117th Battalion on 16 March 1916. He was underage at the time and noted his date of birth as 1898 vice 1899.

He sailed to England with the 117th Battalion but was transferred to the 14th Battalion upon disbandment of the 117th in 1917.

Fred West was awarded the Military Medal on two occassions, once in 1917 and again in 1918. His medals are proudly displayed at the Royal Montreal Regiment Museum in Montreal.

After the war Fred West returned to the Eastern Townships. He is listed as President of the 117th Battalion Association in 1948.

Fred West was the last surviving member of the 14th Battalion and also the last surviving member of the original 117th Battalion.

Fred West passed away on 01 May 2000 and is interned in Bowmanville, Ontario.
