Major Dunsmore was transferred to the 23rd Reserve Battalion on 06 January 1917, upon disbandment of the 117th Battalion. He remained with the 23rd Reserve Battalion until 13 February 1917 when he was deemed surplus to CEF requirements and returned to Canada on 20 February 1917 aboard SS Grampian.

Major Dunsmore was an active member of the 117th Battalion Association and served on its Executive until his death.

At the time of attestation Major Dunsmore was married and had 7 sons and 2 daughters, William, George, Douglas, Andrew, Arthur, Charles, Allan, Pearl, and Grace.
